Some fantastic walks and tramps are managed by the Department of Conservation.

In and near Whataroa (10 minutes south of Mount Adam Lodge) you can, visit Petr Hlavacek Gallery, featuring beautiful New Zealand Landscapes. You can stand astride the Pacific and Australian continental plates with Alpine Fault Tours. You can see New Zealand's only white heron nesting colony with White Heron Sanctuary Tours

In and near Okarito (20 minutes south of Mount Adam Lodge) you can go deep into Kiwi habitat with Okarito Kiwi Tours, explore the waterways of Okarito lagoon with Okarito Kayaks and view the abundant bird life, walk along the beach and enjoy it's drama and magnificent and unusual rocks.

Once you get to Franz Josef (30 minutes south of Mount Adam Lodge) there are many activities for you to enjoy! We suggest visiting Franz Josef Glacier to start planning your visit. We can book flights on your behalf.

If you enjoy hunting and fishing, welcome to paradise! A number of lakes and streams offering trout, salmon and whitebait in season, are just a short trip from our front door.


Mount Adam Lodge is in the heart of the Franz Josef/Waiau permit area, as well as the Adams Wilderness Area (winter ballot necessary), offering red deer, tahr and chamois, with a number of huts only a five-minute flight away. Consider booking your hunting party in for the night before or after your trip. Please contact us directly for group rates, room configurations and inclusions.
